DESCRIPTION:Sat 30 May – Rory Gallagher Tribute. 7pm to 11pm. Tickets for $25 from www.humanitix.com \n  \nThe Adelaide Irish Club presents the First Australian Rory Gallagher Tribute Festival – a celebration of his life and music with a blend of the Blues and Irish traditions. \nThe Tribute to Rory will feature The Gwyn Ashton Trio (Guitar\, Harmonica\, Bass & Drums). Gwynn supported Rory in Adelaide during his tour of Australia in 1991. After Rory Gallagher’s untimely passing in 1995\, Gwyn was chosen as lead guitarist in ‘The Band of Friends’ by Gerry MacEvoy who had played bass with Rory over many years\, mutliple tours and on his finest recordings. \nIn his last interview\, Rory wanted to explore the links between the Blues and Irish traditional music. On this night\, we will hounour his legacy by performing some of Rory’s songs with Uillean Pipes (Jack Brennan\, Tom Stafford)\, fiddle (Dave Lambert) with John Murphy of Cork\, Ireland (on guitar\, mandolin and vocals). The night will also feature respected SA guitarist\, Richie Robinson and special guests. \nRory was recently voted Ireland’s Greatest ever Music Artist\, ahead of Thin Lizzy and U2. Brian May of Queen credited Rory as his inspiration\, while Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton reportedly considered a young Rory the best guitarist in the world at the time. \nThis will be the first – we hope of many – Rory Gallagher Tribute Nights in Australia. It will co-incide with the annual International Rory Gallagher Tribute Festival in Ballyshannon\, Ireland and celebrations in his ‘Hometown’ in Cork – almost 20\,000 kilometers from Adelaide – ‘As the Crow Flies.’

DESCRIPTION:Sat 2 May – RU Brown Piobaireachd Society Recital. From 6pm. Tickets at the door for $20. Enquiries to www.rubrown.org.au-events \nThe  R U Brown Piobaireachd Society of South Australia Inc. was formed to honour the memory of the late Pipe Major Robert Urquhart Brown MBE of Balmoral\, Scotland who visited Australia in 1972. \nBob Brown was employed as a piper and ghillie at the Balmoral Estate. In 1928\, he was sent to John MacDonald MBE of Inverness for lessons.  Bob Nicol was also a pupil at that time\, and their lessons continued until 1939. During the war years\, Bob Brown was Pipe Major of the 5th/7th Battalion Gordon Highlanders. \nKnown for his fluidity of style\, Bob Brown won the Gold Medal for Piobaireachd at the Northern Meeting\, Inverness in 1928 and at the Argyllshire Gathering\, Oban in 1931. \nOn his way to Australia\, Bob unfortunately suffered from thrombosis in the leg  and this proved to be troublesome. Initially\, he seemed to respond to medical treatment. However\, after judging in Hobart\, Tasmania at the Australian Championships\, he was forced to abandon his tour and return to Scotland where he died a few days after arriving at his home. \nThe Society now meets on a monthly basis to promote piping and to share the knowledge and enjoyment of the instrument\, as suggested by Bob Brown.  A number of competitions are conducted each year\, with the biggest of these being the Gold Medal Competition held in May in Bob Brown’s honour.  This has become one of the most respected competitions in the Southern Hemisphere.

DESCRIPTION:Najwan Darwish is a poet from Jerusalem\, Palestine. He has published nine poetry books in Arabic and his work has been translated into over 20 languages. The New York Review of Books described him as “one of the foremost Arabic-language poets”. \nNajwan lives under illegal and extremely oppressive Israeli occupation\, and although he doesn’t shy away from speaking about the daily realities of that\, his poems often read more like prayers than polemics. DESCRIPTION:Book a table by emailing: cmcadelaide@gmail.com \nThe Celtic Music Club hosts a Céilí on the third Saturday of the month from 7:30–10:30 pm in the Irish Hall\, 13-15 Carrington Street\, Adelaide. These nights are a lot of fun and a great place to meet new people. Most of the dances are called and are walked through so no previous experience is needed. The Samhain (Halloween) and Nollaig (Christmas) Céilí usually involve fancy dress and are a great night out for children. First timers are always  welcome! Music is provided by the CMC Céilí band. \nDetails of the Céilí are advertised on the Events page and on our Facebook page. \n• Time: 7:30 pm – 10:30 pm (Doors open 7:00 pm) \n• Entry is $10 per person\, under 18’s free! \n• Our bar is licensed & soft drinks/water are available. \n• BYO Snacks/Supper.
